Chelsea are currently looking to replace Reece James with £30m defender

Towards the January transfer window, Chelsea has made defender Nico Elvedi of Borussia Monchengladbach a target.

Reece James, 24, has another hamstring injury, which will keep him out of action for some time. As a result, according to a TEAMtalk rumor, Nico Elvedi might be signed by Chelsea in a possible £30 million deal.

The report claims that the club is drawn to the Switzerland international’s versatility as a center-back and right-back, especially in light of James’ most recent injury.

Since Thiago Silva’s future is also unknown, Elvedi might step in to take the Brazilian’s place.

The season ends with the end of his contract, and there hasn’t been much talk about a renewal. Alan Pardew, a former Premier League manager, has asserted that Chelsea would be a poorer team in his absence.

Here, Chelsea must exercise caution. They need to take action because James is still suffering injuries, and that might include adding a new defender.

But the England international is such a talented athlete. You want him as your first-choice right-back when he’s healthy, so the team has to sign a player who can fill in for him at the position and is willing to be underneath him.

Malo Gusto was obviously acquired for that purpose, but this season he has also suffered from injuries and was suspended. Should James be unable to resolve his hamstring problems, the Frenchman might not be sufficient on his own.

That’s the reason it makes sense to bring in someone with Elvedi’s versatility. Furthermore, it does not appear like he will be overly expensive, even if Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have never had any issues with that.
