Rene Meulensteen, a former Manchester United coach, has slammed Antony and Alejandro Garnacho for having ‘no intention’ of serving their striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Hojlund failed to register a single shot in United’s 1-0 home loss to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, and his team was ousted from the Champions League after finishing bottom of Group A. The Danish international has five goals in Europe this season but is yet to score in the Premier League.
There are growing doubts about the £72 million summer signing, who has a history of poor finishing both in Europe and at home. However, Meulensteen has blamed the two wide starts for giving almost little service.
“I thought he [Hojlund] was way short [against Bayern],” Meulensteen explained to talkSPORT. “He didn’t get a single kick against those defenders.”
“But the issue is that he is flanked by two individuals [Antony and Garnacho] who have no intention of providing him with any kind of service because they want to create things for themselves and not help any striker.” So there is an imbalance, and that imbalance is moving forward while also returning in terms of the defensive shape that we’ve seen in so many games.”
Meulensteen’s fear is shared by one of his former Manchester United teammates, Paul Scholes. The former Reds midfielder has already chastised club captain Bruno Fernandes for not doing enough to assist the Dane, and he also blamed Antony and Garnacho for Tuesday’s defeat.
“It’s a big concern where the goals are going to come from – you expect a lot of product from your wide players, the Antonys, the Garnachos but they’re quite selfish players,” he said in an interview with TNT Sports. “They’re thinking about scoring themselves, their own goals, [Marcus] Rashford isn’t in form this season, I know he was ill tonight but he’s not been firing either.”
