Jurgen Klopp has stated that he is unconcerned with the argument surrounding Union Saint-Gilloise’s opening goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss in Belgium on Thursday.
The Reds suffered their third defeat in all competitions this season, despite the fact that they were already assured of a spot in the Europa League’s final 16 before kick-off.
Goalscorer Mohamed Amoura circled Caoimhin Kelleher after seemingly breaking the Reds’ offside trap, but replays later revealed that the goal should have been subjected to a more severe VAR scrutiny.
When asked about the opening goal at Lotto Park, Klopp said the hosts deserved to win but did not want to get involved in a VAR controversy.
“I think we definitely all saw the same game, so for us it was a deserved win for Union,” Klopp was quoted as saying. “Even though I heard the first goal was offside, nobody can tell for sure.”
“We’ll see, but who cares?” They are well set up, they are top of the league, they played a stronger side, I completely mixed up the team, and I believe the adjustments we made, the quantity of changes, were too much for rhythm.
“We had to mature into the game.” I’m really delighted that happened more and more in the second half, and that we gave it a game, a proper game at the end. Previously, they gave us control, won the balls on counter-attack, and it was incredibly hard.”
“It was pretty intense on a really difficult pitch,” Klopp remarked. It wasn’t terrific, and you could tell how intense it was when a couple of Union players cramped up.
“So, in the end, we could have scored the equalizer, which would have been nice, and we would have loved to have taken the point here.” For some, it was a life-changing experience, while for others, it was beneficial to their rhythm.
“I saw good performances, and, of course, as a team, it’s not a fair assessment to say they’re now top of the table in Belgium, and we come here, bring kids – it’s really difficult.” But I thought we gave it a shot, and that’s fine with me. Nobody was hurt or is hurt, so we recuperate, go home, and go again.”
