Controversial Moment: Liverpool supporters fume and accuse UEFA officials of ‘blatant CHEATING’ after Union Saint-Gilloise’s opening goal

In their last group stage match of the second-tier European competition, Mohamed Amoura of the opposition gave the hosts the lead, putting Jurgen Klopp’s team behind.

Liverpool supporters aren’t thrilled because they think replays indicate the striker was offside. The goal was given as the Belgian team took the lead against the flow of play.

Replays show that striker Mohamed Amoura appeared to be in the offside position when the ball was played

Amoura appeared to be offside in the build-up as he went through the middle of defenders Jarell Amorin Quansah and Ibrahima Konate before finishing past second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The 23-year-old was put through on goal by a ball from Gustaf Nilsson, Amoura’s striking partner, however it appears from screenshots that he was ahead of Liverpool defender Quansah and Konate at the time of the pass.

Union Saint-Gilloise’s opening goal against the Reds in Thursday’s Europa League match has infuriated Liverpool supporters, who argue that it was offside.

One Liverpool supporter fumed: ‘Offside surely?’ before going on to add; ‘come on, it’s like a tiny fraction of a second. Zoom in and you’ll see the white of the ball still close to his foot.’

Another added: ‘Blatant cheating he’s so far offside,’ in response to the questionable goal being allowed to stand.

Union Saint-Gilloise took the lead, but Quansah, a Liverpool defender, equalized moments later with his first club goal. VAR chose not to examine the incident.

After Cameron Puertas scored the third goal of the first half, the home team took the lead for the second time during the game.

As another Reds supporter said, ‘Sorry to labour the point but a better screenshot doesn’t make it any more onside, does it? Ha.’

A similar comment was made online by someone who said: ‘Clear as day offside. Doesn’t matter because of the occasion but yet again we get zero replays for a reason.’

The overall result means little to Liverpool’s European ambitions this season with Klopp’s squad already qualified for the next stage of the competition after topping their group.

He decided to rest several first-team starters for the match ahead of Sunday’s eagerly-anticipated Premier League clash against Man United at Anfield.
