Jurgen Klopp has claimed that he is unfazed with the controversy surrounding Union Saint-Gilloise’s first-half goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Belgium on Thursday.
The Reds were defeated for the third time this season in all competitions, despite the fact that they were already guaranteed a place in the Europa League’s last 16 before kickoff.
Mohamed Amoura rounded Caoimhin Kelleher after appearing to break the Reds’ offside trap, but replays later revealed that the goal should have been submitted to more stringent VAR examination.
When asked about the opening goal at Lotto Park, Klopp stated that the hosts deserved to win but did not want to be drawn into a VAR dispute.
“I think we definitely all saw the same game, so for us it was a well-deserved win for Union,” Klopp was quoted as saying. “Even though I heard the first goal was offside, nobody can tell for sure.”
“We’ll see, but who cares?” They are well set up, they are top of the league, they played a stronger side, I completely switched up the team, and I felt the changes we made, the quantity of changes, were too much for rhythm.
“We had to mature into the game.” I’m really happy it happened more and more in the second half, and that we finally gave it a game, a proper game. Previously, they gave us possession and won the balls on counter-attack, which was really difficult.”
“It was pretty intense on a really difficult pitch,” said Klopp. It wasn’t great, and you could tell how heated it was when two Union players cramped up.
“So, in the end, we could have scored the equalizer, which would have been nice, and we would have loved to have taken the point here.” It was a life-changing experience for some, while it was beneficial to others.
“I saw good performances, and, of course, as a team, it’s not a fair assessment to say they’re now top of the table in Belgium, and we come here, bring kids – it’s really difficult.” But I believe we gave it our best attempt, which is good with me. Nobody was or is wounded, so we rest, return home, and go again.”
