With a confusing message on social media, David de Gea reveals his comeback to the Premier League

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League in recent weeks, and he’s teased supporters online with cryptic messages.

The veteran shot-stopper, 33, is currently unattached after leaving Old Trafford at the conclusion of his contract in the summer, but has been linked with a variety of clubs in recent weeks.

As a free agent, De Gea can sign with clubs outside of the transfer window, which means he could return before the end of January. And, after suggesting a move in recent weeks, the Spaniard has sparked interest once more with a cryptic remark.

De Gea posted an image of goalkeeping gloves on a field to his 15 million Instagram followers, along with an animated caption that read: “Work, work, work.” Unsurprisingly, the social media rumor mill has gone into overdrive since the post.

De Gea has recently surfaced as a major target for Newcastle United, who are currently without No. 1 Nick Pope due to a dislocated shoulder. The England international is anticipated to miss the majority of the season, and De Gea would be a solid, experienced replacement for Eddie Howe’s squad.

Martin Dubravka has taken over in Pope’s absence, but the Magpies are set to weigh their options in the coming weeks. However, they are not the only Premier League club considering a transfer for De Gea.

Last month, it was revealed that Manchester United were also planning to approach De Gea in order to entice him back to Old Trafford. Andre Onana, the goalkeeper recruited in the summer to replace De Gea, might miss four games when he travels to the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

It remains to be seen whether United would make a formal move for De Gea, and whether the former Atletico Madrid star would consider returning to Old Trafford less than a year after leaving.

De Gea has already turned down offers from a number of teams, including a substantial offer from the Saudi Pro League. However, The Mail reported earlier this month that he is’more susceptible’ to offers and may consider returning to England.
