Manchester United may be missing more than a dozen players for their journey to archrivals Liverpool on Sunday, where they were humiliated 7-0 last season.
Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were added to the list of forced absences after both sustained injuries in the first half of United’s 1-0 Champions League loss at Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Erik ten Hag is dealing with a personnel dilemma ahead of the trip to Anfield, with the United bench likely to consist of periphery and youth players, as well as two goalkeepers, as it did on Tuesday.
Among the 13 players that will be missing this weekend are:
Victor Lindelof (knock)
The 29-year-old missed the Red Devils’ 3-0 loss to Bournemouth and did not recuperate in time to play Bayern Munich. Lindelof started 10 of the Red Devils’ 16 Premier League games this season and could be forced to sit out again.
Harry Maguire (groin)
Having previously appeared set to quit Old Trafford, England’s star has made a comeback in recent weeks. Maguire has appeared in all nine of United’s Premier League games this season.
He played only 40 minutes in the midweek loss to Bayern Munich, and if he does not recover in time, Ten Hag will be in a difficult position when it comes to selecting his defense.
Luke Shaw (hamstring)
Sticking to the backline, the left-back has had an injury-plagued season. He missed nearly three months earlier this season due to a hamstring issue.
Shaw returned to the Premier League for four games before being forced to withdraw in the loss to Bayern Munich and was slated to undergo more tests.
Lisandro Martinez (Foot)
Martinez has made only a few appearances this season after an outstanding debut season for the Red Devils. Because of a foot ailment, he has only made six appearances for the club.
Martinez has returned to training but is still a long way from returning to competitive play.
Tyrell Malacia (Knee)
Malacia, another long-term absentee for the Red Devils, has not played a single minute this season. United said earlier this month that the former Feyenoord player hoped to return in the new year.
Casemiro (Thigh)
The Brazilian midfielder has been out for just over two months after suffering a thigh injury in the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle. It was his second injury of the season, following an ankle injury.
He, like Martinez, has accelerated his recuperation since returning to Carrington. The game against Liverpool this weekend, however, may come too soon for him.
Christian Eriksen (Knee)
The Danish playmaker has missed the Red Devils’ previous four Premier League games, as well as their last two European outings. Eriksen is anticipated to be out for about a month due to a knee injury, but he hopes to be back by Christmas.
Mason Mount (Calf)
Mount, one of the Red Devils’ pricey summer recruits, has battled to carve out a role for himself following a couple setbacks. The midfielder has not played in the league since last month’s narrow victory over Luton Town.
In slightly better news, he is among those who have returned to training and may be in contention.
Amad (Knee)
Ten Hag was anticipated to give the Ivorian winger a shot this season after he shone for Sunderland previous season. That hasn’t quite worked out.
Due to a knee injury, Amad has not played a single minute for the Red Devils this season. He has been linked with another loan move, with Championship leaders Leicester among those interested.
Marcus Rashford (Illness)
Rashford, the Red Devils’ leading scorer last season, has struggled to gain traction this season, scoring just twice. He was benched in the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, and he missed the loss against Bayern due to sickness.
If Rashford is able to heal, it remains to be seen whether he would be reinstated to the squad.
Anthony Martial (Illness)
Martial, like his attacking teammate Rashford, was recently rested by Ten Hag before returning to the starting lineup against Bournemouth. He, like Rashford, was unable to play against Bayern.
Bruno Fernandes (Suspended)
Fernandes, while not being injured, is unable to participate against Liverpool. He received a booking in the loss to Bournemouth.
He received five yellow cards as a result, earning him a one-match suspension, which he will serve this weekend.
Jadon Sancho (Discipline)
Sancho, who is neither injured nor suspended, is nonetheless sidelined by Ten Hag following their public spat earlier this season. The former Borussia Dortmund star has not appeared in the Premier League since August, and that does not appear to be changing against Liverpool.
