Man United’s selfish pair blamed for Rasmus Hojlund’s difficulties, but Glazers chastised for signing the wrong striker

Two Manchester United players have been blamed for Rasmus Hojlund’s difficulties in front of goal this season, while one pundit believes the Red Devils purchased the wrong striker.

The Denmark international joined United from Serie A club Atalanta in a £72 million transfer over the summer, but he has yet to fix United’s central striker problems.

Despite looking far more dangerous in the Champions League, where he scored five goals in six games, Hojlund has yet to score in the Premier League ahead of the congested winter stretch of fixtures.

Even if his performances in Europe have demonstrated his obvious potential, he reverted to his domestic form in the must-win match against Bayern Munich in midweek, having looked sluggish recently. Indeed, United are understood to be hunting for a replacement.

Former United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen believes the teenager cannot be held fully accountable for his troubles, with Hojlund’s teammates also bearing some of the blame – two in particular.

“I thought he was way short [against Bayern].” “He never got a kick against those defenders,” Meulensteen told talkSPORT.

“But the issue is that he is flanked by two individuals [Antony and Garnacho] who have no intention of providing him with any kind of service because they want to create things for themselves and not help any striker.”

“So there’s an imbalance, and that imbalance is going forward but also going back in terms of the defensive shape which we’ve seen in so many games.”

Manchester United signed the incorrect striker

While Antony continues to struggle, having failed to record a single assist this season, Garnacho has been one of United’s bright spots.

The Argentine has three goals and an assist while still outperforming other United strikers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Erik ten Hag’s top striker target last summer was Harry Kane, who ended up joining Bayern for only £10 million more and has since produced a staggering 22 goals and eight assists in 20 appearances.

“The Glazers have backed the managers with money but have they backed them with the players the managers want?” Meulensteen went on to say.

“Everyone knows that if United signed Harry Kane, he would bring 25 to 30 goals to your team.” Simple.”

United will be back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Premier League leaders and fierce rivals Liverpool.
