Bruno Fernandes will serve a one-match suspension against Liverpool this Sunday after receiving a fifth yellow card late in Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.
While he hasn’t been in the best of form recently, fans are already concerned about who will fill the midfield gap left by Fernandes this weekend against Liverpool. Erik ten Hag will also have to decide who will captain the team in the absence of Portugal’s hero.
Fernandes has appeared in 23 of the Reds’ 24 games this season, starting in all but one; in the Reds’ fourth-round Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle United, he came off the substitute for a 25-minute cameo.
Raphael Varane and Casemiro captained the squad against Crystal Palace and Newcastle, respectively, in the two games in which the 29-year-old did not play. The former has now fallen out of favor, while the latter has been ruled out of Sunday’s match at Anfield.
Ten Hag addresses captaincy speculation
When asked if he’d selected which member of his side would be designated captain for the highly anticipated match, Ten Hag remained tight-lipped. He merely said, “Yes, I know.”
When asked if he would give the name, the Dutchman said, “No.”
