Crystal Palace held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at home after leading 2-0

Crystal Palace fought from 2-0 down to clinch a 2-2 draw against Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Michael Olise’s penalty deep into extra time.

On 24 minutes, Jack Grealish scored his third goal in three games to help City move into second place in the table, before Rico Lewis scored his first Premier League goal from inside the box on 54 minutes.

On 76 minutes, Jean-Philippe Mateta started the Palace comeback, scoring from close range following a fantastic Jeffrey Schlupp cross.

And Mateta earned his team a penalty when he was clearly brought down late by Phil Foden with only minutes remaining, surprising City fans who had seen their team dominate possession and chances but fail to score a game-winning third goal.

With City again without the injured Erling Haaland, it was Grealish who combined with Foden to give his side a deserved lead, slipping the ball into the corner of the net after Foden’s superb pass.

Instead of going up to second place, City is now in fourth place, three points behind leaders Liverpool, who host Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Pep Guardioa’s side will travel to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening for the FIFA Club World Cup and a semi-final against Japan’s Urawa Reds, after drawing with Liverpool (1-1) and Tottenham (3-3) in their previous league matches. They play Everton in the Premier League on December 27.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH: RICO LEWIS (MANCHESTER CITY)

He started in midfield for City ahead of Mateo Kovacic, and he did not disappoint with a mature display alongside Rodri at the heart of the action for the home side, scoring his first Premier League goal for his boyhood club.

Lewis thought to have sealed the three points for his team early in the second half, but the late, late wild run of play that awarded Palace a point should not be disregarded.
