Mykhailo Mudryk summed up ‘his Chelsea career’ with a long-range shot that ‘almost hits corner flag’

Large-scale signing for Chelsea During their 2-0 victory over Sheffield United, Mykhailo Mudryk’s goal-scoring woes persisted, with one attempt drawing unwelcome attention.

With a long-range effort that went closer to the corner flag than the Sheffield United goal, Mykhailo Mudryk “summed up his Chelsea career”.

On Saturday afternoon, December 16, at Stamford Bridge, Mudryk, 22, cut in from the left and found space about thirty yards out as the Blues looked to take the lead.

He launched himself with a misdirected attempt that veered off course and rebounded past the 18-yard line for a goal kick. Supporters of Chelsea thought it perfectly captured his tenure at Stamford Bridge following his £88.5 million arrival in January.

Someone complained: “Mudryk attempts a shot that almost hits the corner flag.” Someone else said: “That shot is where MM is at right now he needs so much development.”

“Sums up his Chelsea career so far,” said a third person. A fourth voice repeated: “That sums up Mudryk, great bit of dribbling then puts it out near the corner flag with a shot.”

“Mudryk is defined by that dribble and shot in the twenty-first minute. Five people said, “Ability to get past players but shoots at a stupid position that goes corner flag,” while six others said, “The greatest Mudryk thing ever.” But he’s having a blast today.”

Without Mudryk, the hosts had 80% of the possession in the first forty-five minutes, but managed just an xG of 0.10. However, they had a much better second half.

In his post-match remarks, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino gave an explanation of the tactical changes he made after halftime to turn the tide: “We made a mistake because we were standing still too much in our positions.

“We did not show the capacity to be flexible. It was easy for them to identify our positions and to block us and to make us put the ball in the positions that were them easy to stop.

“We swapped and then the position of our midfielders and full-backs. In the second half I think we fixed different positions and started to find different possibilities with the ball and stretch the line with Raheem [Sterling] and Jackson going into the space.”
