Roy Keane’s darkest worries regarding the Manchester United locker room have already been realized

Roy Keane’s darkest worries about the Manchester United dressing room were realized under past managers, according to Scott McTominay. McTominay, who has five Premier League goals this season, shed light on what used to be a ‘toxic’ climate at Old Trafford while putting his weight behind current manager Erik ten Hag.

The Scotland international debuted for United under Jose Mourinho before moving on to play for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Ten Hag is now in charge, and his reign is on the rocks following a rocky start to the season.

Despite overseeing a defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, which destroyed United’s European prospects for another season, McTominay maintains he still has the backing of senior individuals in the dressing room.

In supporting Ten Hag, the 27-year-old said that the Ajax dressing room was not always a happy environment prior to the arrival of the Ajax boss.

Roy Keane

Roy Keane has spoken out about the perils of a rogue Manchester United locker room.

“Right now, we are at the stage where we have big characters in the dressing room,” he stated before of the Bayern match. “It’s not just like it was under some of the other managers, where it was a little bit toxic at times.” The boys are completely behind their manager.

“I’ve said that in many other interviews, and it will remain that way.” We also have an excellent coaching staff, so what the players think and what is said behind closed doors sometimes get lost in translation. But all we care about is doing well for the football team.”

Back in 2022, Keane, who made nearly 500 first-team appearances for the Red Devils, warned of the risks of a dysfunctional dressing room. “You’re in trouble anywhere if you don’t have a decent dressing room,” he told Sky Sports before Ten Hag was hired.

“As we’ve seen with Manchester United, when things go against them, they almost throw in the towel.” It’s a poor representation of the club’s senior players. Young players get carried away and believe they are players. You have no chance if you have a terrible dressing room.”

Manchester United Training Session

According to Scott McTominay, Manchester United players back Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is still throwing caution to the wind when it comes to handling his big-name players, despite Keane’s warning. The 53-year-old’s initial strategy was to effectively force Cristiano Ronaldo out of the club.

Because of tense relationships, Jadon Sancho has been dropped from the first squad and Raphael Varane has been frozen out of the starting XI this season.
