Chris Sutton expects more from Manchester United’s Antony before the club’s journey to Merseyside.
After a dismal season for Erik ten Hag’s players, the Brazilian, formerly of Ajax, was asked to ‘give considerably more’.
“United can only win by playing counter-attacking football, but for that to work, their forwards will need to offer far more than we’ve seen from them recently,” the ex-Blackburn Rovers striker wrote for BBC Sport.
“Perhaps Antony will cut inside and bend one into the top corner this time, but I doubt it because he has yet to score this season.”
“It’s possible that Alejandro Garnacho will show more brilliance, and his pace could cause Liverpool problems down their right side.”
“But I don’t really know whether Rasmus Hojlund is any good or not, because the service he gets is non-existent.”
Following 17 appearances and almost 1,000 minutes of football, the 23-year-old has yet to score this season.
A perfect game for Liverpool’s forwards?
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention some of our own strikers’ recent troubles before of such a big game.
Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, in particular, might utilize the forthcoming match to set the tone for the rest of the season, despite their own troubles in front of goal.
If there was ever a time for them to put on their scoring boots…
A game to take seriously
Regardless of United’s recent difficulties, Jurgen Klopp was correct to emphasize that a wounded beast in the Red Devils could still pose a threat at L4.
While another 7-0 thrashing is perfectly possible, it should not be assumed in a contest that has historically demanded the best from both teams.
