Liverpool and Manchester United played to a goalless draw at a ‘quiet’ Anfield, thanks to a lack of quality in front of goal.
Many expected the Reds to comfortably defeat Erik ten Hag’s team given their opponents’ recent dismal form.
Liverpool were defeated by Manchester United at Anfield.
Liverpool won this game 7-0 last season, and United haven’t scored at Anfield since a 3-1 loss in 2018.
Despite recent setbacks, Ten Hag and co. were able to hold on for a point despite an assault of Liverpool opportunities.
The hosts pushed and puffed as they looked for an early goal, but to no avail.
As halftime approached, United legend and Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville was dissatisfied with the atmosphere at such a historic venue.
“This is the worst atmosphere I’ve seen from a Manchester United vs Liverpool game, it’s never been as quiet, and that’s from five minutes in.”
Anfield is often considered as having one of the best stadium atmospheres in the world, but this did not appear to be the case on Sunday.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was observed motioning to the crowd during the second half to turn up the noise in order to inspire a late winner.
Despite his attempts, Liverpool were unable to score the goal that would have made it four successive Premier League victories.
Neville was not a fan of the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Darwin Nunez was chastised for squandering a late-game opportunity when he should have chased the ball and kept the opportunity alive.
United had chances to score as well, but their counter-attacks were not matched with the right selections in the final third.
When their recent form and record against the Reds are considered, a draw is a result they will undoubtedly be pleased with.
Liverpool, on the other hand, has missed out on a chance to reclaim first place in the Premier League.
They are presently one point behind leaders Arsenal but four points ahead of champions Manchester City.
