Darwin Nunez confused Liverpool fans when, despite going through on goal, he hesitated to request for a penalty against Manchester United.
Nunez had a chance to score in the 75th minute of Liverpool’s goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday, but he hesitated as he requested for a penalty to referee Michael Oliver. The ball had deflected off the striker and into the path of Luis Diaz, whose shot was saved by Diogo Dalot. Instead of pursuing down the rebound, Nunez came to a halt to protest a foul on Diaz by the desperate United defenders.
Nunez’s actions astounded former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. “What’s Nunez stopped for?” he screamed while commentating on the game for Sky Sports. Simply go across and throw it into an empty net!”
“He [Nunez] thinks it’s a penalty, but I don’t think it is,” co-commentator Gary Neville responded. “I thought they [Dalot and Sofyan Amrabat] were flying across and blocking.”
Both Liverpool and Manchester United turned in dismal displays at Anfield, but Liverpool fans will be hoping that an in-form Nunez elected to play on. The Uruguayan striker has only four goals in 16 league games this season and has failed to score in his past ten appearances in all competitions.
The dismal outcome saw Jurgen Klopp’s side relinquish first place in the Premier League table to Arsenal, whom they will face at Anfield on Saturday. Nunez will look to prepare for the big game against West Ham in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final showdown on Wednesday.
