Diogo Dalot received two yellow cards in the final 10 seconds of Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
Over the course of 93 minutes on Merseyside, there had been little to get excited about, but there was to be late drama in stoppage time. United finished the game with 10 men after referee Michael Oliver dismissed Dalot.
There was some misunderstanding as to why Dalot was being escorted off the field, but it soon became clear that he had received two cautions in a matter of seconds. Dalot was enraged when a throw-in was granted against him, with the ball bouncing off Mohamed Salah’s boot and rolling out of play.
Dalot challenged the initial award of a throw to Liverpool, prompting a yellow card to be flashed in his direction. The versatile Portuguese international continued to vent his rage at Oliver, earning him a second caution and a needless dismissal.
Dalot will now be suspended for one match, taking him out of United’s encounter against West Ham on December 23. His countryman, Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes, will be available for that game after serving a ban for accumulating five bookings in the 2023-24 season against Liverpool.
