Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans show support after Scott McTominay performance against Liverpool

In the absence of Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was picked to wear the captain’s armband against Liverpool.

Bruno Fernandes was suspended against Liverpool after receiving his fifth booking of the season the previous week.

With last season’s captain Harry Maguire pulled out due to injury, it was unclear who would take his position.

Scott McTominay was a wise choice, and he delivered a strong performance as Manchester United battled to a 0-0 draw at Anfield.

Bardsley said: “He’s a super player and deserves his opportunity today. It suits him, he’s got bundles of energy.

“His performances this season have been outstanding. He knows what it means to wear the badge, knows what this fixture is all about, the perfect candidate to lead the team out today.”

McTominay delivered a committed effort, leading by example as United’s midfield dug in, scrapped, and played a bit too.

After the game, the Scotland international took to Instagram to thank Manchester United fans.

He wrote: “Tough fight, but so so proud to captain the team today. Your support in the away end kept us going.”

Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire express their support

McTominay received a comment to his post from teammate and former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, who replied, ‘Love it bro,’ in response.

Bruno Fernandes will almost certainly return for United’s next game and take the armband, but the team’s midfield appeared more balanced without him.

McTominay has been deployed high up the pitch this season, so pairing him with Fernandes has been a recipe for disaster in recent games.

Erik ten Hag had to reconsider his strategy for this game, and it will be interesting to watch how he approaches the game against West Ham on Saturday.
