Richard Keys is not one to hold back his thoughts, and he has identified what he believes to be Manchester United’s lone positive after their draw with Liverpool.
Keys, along with Andy Gray, criticized United’s tactics at Anfield as they managed a 0-0 draw.
Erik ten Hag set up his team in a deep defensive shape, and it mostly succeeded.
Keys, on the other hand, was unimpressed. In his essay today, he backed up that stance by claiming that the sole bright spot for United was the play of Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay.
The former Sky Sports anchor had the following to say about United and McTominay in his recent Richard Keys Blog column.
“The only bright spot for United was Scott McTominay’s performance.” He’s not the kind to put in a defensive shift. In that regard, I’ve heard him described as ‘economical’. He’s really a 10, which is how Scotland uses him. United should do the same today. Put him in that job and give him the armband indefinitely. He was extremely articulate after the game. He IS a leader, which the gloomy, petulant Fernandes is not. Football is strange in how rapidly things can change. “If West Ham had come up with £30 million on deadline day – and they hadn’t done other business,” Keys said.
When it comes to McTominay, Keys makes a valid point. He has been excellent for long time and deserves to be United’s captain.
Of course, the counter-argument here is that United had more than one good. At the end of the day, they suppressed a strong Liverpool team and earned a point at a difficult venue.
Any team in the league would take a 0-0 draw at Liverpool, and if you’re a Manchester United supporter, you can’t really complain.
It felt like a significant day for McTominay personally. But we all know Fernandes will return as captain, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Scot attempt to move on again in the summer.
