According to The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III, the Boston Celtics are one of the contending teams that have “shown great interest in Isaiah Stewart.”
Detroit’s center is 6’8″, yet he plays bigger than his stature, similar to former Celtic Robert Williams. The Piston is averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and grabbing just under seven rebounds per game. He is shooting 36.7% from beyond the arc on 3.6 tries per game, a career high.
It’s unknown what Detroit would demand in exchange for Stewart or what Boston would have to do financially to get him, but the addition would dramatically strengthen the front court. Stewart, as much as fan favorite Neemias Queta has impressed in his brief appearances with the team, would be an upgrade on the bench.
Boston has been interested in Stewart for some months. Earlier this summer, Edwards verified a June story that the Celtics, among others, inquired about Stewart’s availability.
For those who are unfamiliar with Stewart, he was restrained after taking an elbow to the face from LeBron in 2021.
Coming into the season, it appeared that Boston would be thin in the frontcourt, especially with Kristaps Porzingis’ injury history and Al Horford sitting out one game of back-to-backs. Boston was missing its top three big men against the Magic last week, as KP, Horford, and Luke Kornet were all out.
With Boston’s limited cap space, a deal for the former sixteenth pick in the 2020 draft out of the University of Washington may be too difficult to complete.
