Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has criticized his club, stating they “lack consistency” and that is “not acceptable” in the midst of their season-long troubles.
Despite their recent dismal form, Manchester United interrupted Liverpool’s perfect record at Anfield this season on Sunday, drawing 0-0 with the Reds in the Premier League.
Shaw, who played the entire 90 minutes against Liverpool, believes the Red Devils must find a solution to their inconsistencies and build on their performance against Liverpool.
“That has to be the starting point now.” Every game, whether it’s at Anfield, away, or [at Old Trafford], it has to be the same, and I believe that’s where we’ve been lacking, consistency,” Shaw said in an interview.
Giving more context, the English left-back stated that Manchester United played well against Chelsea but then fell short against Bournemouth 3-0 at Old Trafford.
“It’s not acceptable, we can’t accept that and it’s something that needs to be addressed and changed very quickly because we can’t keep doing this,” Shaw said in a statement.
Following the goalless tie that dropped Liverpool to second place in the 2023-24 Premier League table, Reds captain Virgil van Dijk addressed Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana angrily.
Van Dijk accused the Cameroon goalkeeper, who made eight saves on Sunday, of wasting time. In the corridor, the Dutch center-back confronted Onana and shouted, “Because of you, we only played a half-hour game.” Onana merely returned Van Dijk’s smile and went away.
Meanwhile, Manchester United were fortunate that Shaw’s injury was not catastrophic when he fell down in their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich last week. Manchester United sustained two major injuries during the encounter at Old Trafford, which knocked the hosts out of the Champions League, losing defenders Harry Maguire and Shaw.
Maguire, the Premier League Player of the Month for November, suffered a groin injury in the first half and was replaced in defense by Jonny Evans. Shaw suffered a hamstring strain in the last moments of the first half and was replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka at halftime.
Manchester United’s mounting injury concerns have prompted the club’s head of sports medicine to conduct a complete internal review of the club’s outmoded medical department. This development is thought to have occurred in the context of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s imminent acquisition of a 25% share in the club.
Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Lisandro Martnez, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof, and Amad Diallo are among Manchester United’s current injured players.
Erik ten Hag and company return to Premier League action on Saturday, when they travel to East London to face West Ham.
