Following Liverpool’s goalless draw with Manchester United, former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann expressed his concerns regarding Darwin Nez’s current form in a recent interview. The 24-year-old was one of several Reds players that performed poorly.
Nez, a Uruguayan striker, was purchased by Liverpool for a cost that might top $109 million (£86 million/€100 million) from Benfica. While he has the potential to explode, there is no denying that he has been underperforming recently, with only four Premier League goals this season and none since late October.
Nez had shown potential earlier in the season, scoring a game-winning brace against Newcastle. Despite this, he has unable to find the back of the goal on a consistent basis. And, as recorded by the Daily Mirror, Hamann stated his reservations about Nez’s performance on TalkSport.
“I think the big issue is Nez’s form,” Hamann remarked. “Since he scored those goals against Newcastle, I thought he’d matured into the striker that everyone expected him to be.” I believe he has only scored one or two goals, and his form is concerning.”
Nez scored 15 goals in his first season with Liverpool, despite a shaky start that included being sent off on his home debut. However, his finishing ability has been called into doubt after he missed a critical opportunity against Luton Town.
Despite these obstacles, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is committed to Nez. Earlier this season, Klopp acknowledged Nez’s challenges as a new player in a foreign league but voiced faith that he will eventually live up to his talent.
“He’s a player with a lot of potential,” he said, “but it was a bit of a rocky road.” But he’s here now, and it’s wonderful. It’s a pleasure to work with him; he enjoys training and putting in long hours. He’s not like other strikers, but he provides you a lot of choices.”
