Kieran Trippier of Newcastle has been in poor form in recent weeks, and that continued last night in the Magpies’ EFL Cup match against Chelsea.
The England right-back came in at halftime for Eddie Howe’s side, and with his team leading 1-0 going into added time, he made a mistake that allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to equalize and send the game to penalties.
Trippier would also miss his penalty during the shootout, adding to his miserable month of football, but was later provided support on Instagram by Mudryk.
“Kieran, I just wanna say to you: stay strong,” the Chelsea winger wrote on Twitter. “Sometimes s**t happens but I think you are strong footballer, no matter what.”
Trippier’s gaffes began when he was responsible for two goals in Newcastle’s 3-0 loss at Everton at the start of the month. This resulted in a humiliating loss to Tottenham, before reappearing on Tuesday night against Chelsea.
The right-back will undoubtedly recover from this phase, given he is an outstanding footballer who seldom puts in performances like the ones he has put in over the last month.
Mudryk’s display of support for Trippier was also admirable, as the Ukrainian great understands precisely what the Newcastle player is going through.
