Chelsea defeated Newcastle United on penalties in the Carabao Cup, with Kieran Trippier enduring the nightmare of all nightmares.

The captain of Newcastle United is typically Mr Reliable and Mr Consistent. But, in recent weeks, he has made blunder after error, the most recent being against Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea.

Eddie Howe’s side were minutes away from advancing to the League Cup semi-finals when Kieran Trippier gave Mykhailo Mudryk an open chance to score, which the Chelsea winger took.

To make matters worse, the England right-back saw his spot-kick soar over the post in front of the Newcastle away fans, much to the joy of the Chelsea fans inside Stamford Bridge.

Following the game, Mykhailo Mudryk extended his support to the 33-year-old via his Instagram story in a nice answer.

The Ukraine star wrote: “Kieran, I just wanna say to you: stay strong. Sometimes s__t happens, but I think you are a strong footballer, no matter what.”

From right-back, he has played an important role in leading the squad up the table, notably to the League Cup final and the Champions League last season.

Newcastle fans will be praying that this is merely an out-of-character lapse from the former Tottenham Hotspur player, considering everything is going wrong just now.

One thing is certain: he will receive backing from within. From Eddie Howe, his manager, to the Toon Army loyal.

They recognize Trippier’s importance to the team and recognize that if they are to continue moving forward, he must return to his best.

All Newcastle can do now is get those much-needed three points, starting with a tough trip to Luton Town on Saturday.
