Dimitar Berbatov, a former Manchester United attacker, has urged Marcus Rashford to take inspiration from teammate Scott McTominay during his dismal run of form.
Rashford has struggled for the Red Devils this season after scoring 30 goals the previous season. This season, the England striker has two goals and four assists in 21 games in all competitions.
Manager Erik ten Hag has recently dropped him on a few times. Rashford missed the game against Liverpool owing to illness as well, but Berbatov believes the English forward would have been benched anyway.
He explained to Betfair (via Herald Scotland):
“Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial were both sick during the week, so dropping the England forward was justified.” Even if he wasn’t unwell, the manager has the last say because Rashford has been out of form. He didn’t do anything extraordinary when he came on.”
Berbatov then went on to compare Rashford’s current circumstances to that of Scott McTominay.
“While giving the captaincy to a younger player who is out of form can be beneficial, in this case it was given to the in-form Scott McTominay, who was fantastic.” There are many parallels between Scott’s predicament and Marcus Rashford’s right now.”
He went on to say:
“He was struggling, and no one knew if he was going to stay at United over the summer.” Then, all of a sudden, he scored a couple crucial goals, including a match-winning brace against Brentford, and he continued to press for a starting spot. He’s now captaining the team, so Rashford might be able to learn from how McTominay has turned his situation around.”
McTominay was named captain of Manchester United after impressing this season. Berbatov praised his teammate:
“Scott understands exactly what he must accomplish. Fight for the team, even if it means sacrificing himself. He’s the type of player that every team requires. Teams cannot succeed without guys like him, believe me.”
The former Red Devils striker went on to say:
“Giving McTominay the armband will mentally boost him. It will enable him to think more critically and accept more responsibility. It will make him a better man and athlete.”
