Former Liverpool player Steve McManaman has disputed Virgil van Dijk’s assertion that Manchester United were not out to win Sunday’s goalless draw.
United walked away from Anfield with a draw after holding off Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s team had scored at least two goals in all of their previous home games this season, but they struggled to establish their rhythm in an uncharacteristically quiet atmosphere.
Following the result, a disgruntled Van Dijk stated that Liverpool were the only team attempting to win and that United were ‘buzzing’ with the point. Roy Keane called the defender’s comments “arrogant,” and McManaman has now agreed with him.
When asked if he agreed with Van Dijk’s statements, McManaman replied, “No.” I expected Manchester United to be well-organized, to make themselves difficult to beat, and to counter-attack whenever possible.
“I don’t believe it was a case of only one team wanting to win because Rasmus Hojlund had the best chance of the game.” Manchester United didn’t want to lose, and it was critical for them to avoid defeat given their week, which included being eliminated from all European play.
“The last thing they would have wanted to do was fight fire with fire and lose 3-0 because the pressure on both the players and the manager would have increased.” The most important thing to remember when you’re in problems and facing harsh criticism is to not give up. They need to improve in their next few games, be more creative, and start winning games.”
United were missing club captain Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire for the encounter, but they defended tenaciously to prevent Klopp’s team from creating too many chances. With 20 minutes remaining, Hojlund had a chance to seal an unexpected victory, but his shot was straight at Alisson. Erik ten Hag’s team were pleased to leave Anfield with a point, and McManaman singled out the back four for praise.
“I thought Manchester United’s defenders did a fantastic job,” the former Liverpool player continued. “They appear to be strong and well-defended, and they deserve credit for that.”
“Liverpool had all of the possession, but after Manchester United’s week and all of the criticism they faced, coming to Anfield and getting a clean sheet and a point is very good.” Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane, two players who have received some criticism, were brilliant defensively, as were Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw.”
