The Boston Celtics beat the Sacramento Kings 144-119 on Wednesday night, rebounding from a demoralizing loss at Golden State. Jaylen Brown and Derrick White both scored 28 points.
Boston lost a 17-point lead before losing in overtime to the Warriors on Tuesday night, and faced the rested Kings without leading scorer Jayson Tatum (ankle) and big man Al Horford (rest).
The Celtics, on the other hand, appeared significantly fresher and cruised to their sixth win in seven games.
“It’s been a long year.” “You must have the proper perspective,” stated coach Joe Mazzulla. “Of course, we won’t be thrilled if we lose. The benefit of playing 82 games is that you get to shake it off the next day.”
Kristaps Porzingis controlled the inside for Boston with 24 points, nine rebounds, and six blocked shots after missing the game against Golden State due to a calf injury.
The shooters, led by White, did the rest, as the Celtics made 22 of 42 3-point tries after missing 41 of 58 long-range efforts in the loss to the Warriors.
“We had great shooters missing wide-open looks,” White told ESPN. “You just have to believe that if you keep getting looks, people will knock them down.” We were able to create them today as we were unable to do yesterday. That’s just the way the game is.”
De’Aaron Fox led the Kings, who had won three straight games, with 29 points on his 26th birthday.
The clubs got off to a quick start, with the Kings scoring 11 3-pointers in the opening quarter and the Celtics responding with eight, tying a Mavericks-Warriors game from 2019 for the most combined 3-pointers in a quarter. After one quarter, Sacramento led 41-38.
However, after the Kings’ 3s stopped dropping, the Celtics began to take charge. They hit six more three-pointers in the second quarter, tying the NBA record for a half set in same 2019 game.
Sacramento only made 10 three-pointers in the final three quarters after making 11 in the first.
“We just kind of made an adjustment, just being there on the catch,” White told reporters. “They play quickly. They have a number of talented players on their team. “We rose to the occasion.”
Boston jumped out to a 21-point lead in the third quarter as White and Jrue Holiday sank back-to-back 3s around a Porzingis block.
Late in the third quarter, Brown’s dunk over Trey Lyles increased Boston’s lead to 28 points. From then, the Celtics cruised to their fifth straight victory over the Kings.
“That was some good old-fashioned butt kicking,” remarked Kings coach Mike Brown. “Give the Celtics a lot of credit, especially after a back-to-back.” They didn’t appear to be the crew that had been waiting for us here.”
