Rodri, a Manchester City midfielder, became a member of an exclusive club on Friday when his team defeated Fluminense 4-0 to win the Club World Cup final.
Rodri started as City defeated the Brazilian team in the final in Saudi Arabia. Despite walking off with an injury after 74 minutes, Rodri joined in the celebrations as Pep Guardiola’s team celebrated their first world championship win.
Rodri did not have a very strong performance in the final, but he was an important character in their route to world champions. He was named man of the match in the Champions League final victory over Inter, which guaranteed the club’s qualification for the Club World Cup. Indeed, he is only one of three players to win the FIFA event after being selected the best player in the European final. Only Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale have done it before him, according to Squawka.
The Spain international has been a key player for City this season, scoring four goals and providing four assists in 22 appearances across all competitions. The defensive midfielder acknowledged he was worried ahead of the game given City’s string of poor performances, which he claims “left a very bad feeling in the changing room for us,” therefore he thinks it was a good idea for them to “stop a little bit and then come here to the [Club] World Cup.”
Rodri will be hoping that his injury is not too serious as City prepare for their return to the Premier League, beginning with a game against Everton on December 27 and concluding with a match against bottom team Sheffield United on December 30.
