During Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Anfield, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was not thrilled with referee Chris Kavanagh.
In the 19th minute, Arsenal survived a strong penalty claim as captain Martin Odegaard produced an NBA-style move to take a low ball away from Mo Salah.
After the game, Arsenal defender William Saliba confessed that his team got lucky with the judgment, telling Viaplay: “Of course it was a penalty.” But I’m not the official.”
In the second half, Van Dijk was ruled to have fouled Gabriel Jesus near the center circle, another decision that went against Liverpool.
Van Dijk directed his rage toward referee Kavanagh. Lip-reading TV viewers even caught the Dutchman asking the ref, “Have you been drinking?”
“Have you been drinking?” said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk of referee Chris Kavanagh.
Van Dijk’s statements were followed by a distinct action of tipping a glass towards his mouth.
Van Dijk’s outburst received no immediate repercussions, and the Reds defender finished Saturday’s game without incurring a yellow card.
However, if his conduct toward the referee is shown to be unlawful, he may face a retrospective punishment.
