Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said the club will wrap Joe Gomez in cotton wool and hope he does not become yet another addition to the Premier League club’s snowballing injury crisis.
Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas broke his collarbone in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal, leaving the Merseyside club with limited choices at left back, with first-choice defender Andy Robertson also out with a shoulder injury.
Right-footed Gomez is expected to step in at left back until Robertson returns.
“It’s clearly very difficult for us, really difficult. “You get injuries and we accept them all, but a broken collarbone is really bad because it just takes (so) long,” Klopp said ahead of Tuesday’s match against Burnley at Turf Moor.
“Same as Robbo (Robertson) had, a different injury, but that also takes time, as we all know.”
“We all know we need luck in these moments to get through and now we will have Joey (Gomez) there and just have to make sure we put him in cotton wool and we have to make sure he is always ready for the games.”
Liverpool, who are second in the table, will face Burnley, who overcame Fulham 2-0 in their last league match to climb off the bottom of the table.
Klopp believes Burnley is better than their record suggests. “I have watched quite a few Burnley games and I am pretty impressed by what they are doing – and on Saturday they got then the reward,” he told the BBC.
“We all know that if you win once and have the opportunity to play again in three days, you’ll want to win again, and that’s exactly what we expect – and a pretty good atmosphere as well.” We had best be ready, and we will be.”
