Erik ten Hag is set to make a few changes for Manchester United’s Boxing Day Premier League match against Aston Villa.

United lost 2-0 to West Ham last weekend, thanks to goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus in the second half, and they must improve on that performance.

United have now failed to score in four consecutive games for the first time since autumn 1992. “We didn’t score the goal,” Ten Hag stated after the loss in London. “The first goal’s significance. I believe we dominated the game and did not offer West Ham United anything.

“We created three good chances, but we didn’t take them; one moment of inattention and we’re down, losing the game.” That is how I perceive the performance.

“As I previously stated, we have players who can [score], and they have proven in the past that they can do so.” But we must also admit the things that we did not do as a team and accept responsibility; after all, football is about winning games and scoring goals.

“We have problems; we’ve had many setbacks, injuries, and so on.” However, the players on the field are capable of winning the game. So it’s also about getting into the box, making sure you’re there, making sure you’re eager to come there and willing to be clinical and score a goal.”

Willy Kambwala made his debut against West Ham because Raphael Varane was unable to play due to sickness, but the 30-year-old is expected to make his return against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Diogo Dalot was suspended for the trip to the London Stadium, therefore Aaron Wan-Bissaka took his place at right back. Over the last 18 months, the pair have battled for a starting spot, but the latter seems expected to keep his spot.

Kobbie Mainoo is anticipated to be moved to the bench in midfield to make room for Sofyan Amrabat. Ten Hag is taking great care of the child, and Amrabat’s experience will be invaluable.

There may also be a shift in attack, with Marcus Rashford returning to the starting lineup after starting successive games on the bench.

Rashford hasn’t had much of an effect off the bench, but Antony has yet to score or assist this season.
