‘Robbed’, say Liverpool fans after Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott goals are overturned by VAR in Burnley’s win

Liverpool fans are baffled as to why the decision to disallow Cody Gakpo’s goal against Burnley was not reversed.

The Reds went to Turf Moor knowing that a point would move them to the top of the Premier League table, and they got off to a flying start thanks to Darwin Nunez’s superb goal on six minutes.

Nunez appeared to foul Taylor before Gakpo's goal

Nunez appeared to have fouled Taylor prior to Gakpo’s goal.

Gakpo aided his goal, and the Dutchman thought he had scored himself later in the first half.

His finish, however, was not allowed to stand because referee Paul Tierney identified a foul in the build-up.

Nunez was assessed to have fouled Charlie Taylor within the area, and VAR was also called in, but the goal was upheld.

However, Liverpool fans on social media were outraged, with one asking on X, “What’s wrong with the goal?!?” Gakpo cheated.”

“Very soft there, Gakpo goal disallowed,” another commented.

A third said, with laughing emojis, “Gakpo should have a goal and two assists in 33 minutes.”

“Why was Gakpo goal disallowed because VAR showed that Nunez didn’t touch the Burnley player,” a fourth member of the panel said.

The Reds led 1-0 at halftime, despite a slew of chances to expand their lead, including Mohamed Salah’s strike that rattled Clarets goalkeeper James Trafford’s crossbar.

Elliott also saw his goal disallowed at Turf Moor

Elliott’s goal at Turf Moor was also disallowed.

VAR was called in again at the opening of the second half when Harvey Elliott’s goal was ruled out for offside by Mohamed Salah.

However, replays look to suggest that he was pushed into an offside position, and Liverpool fans vented their displeasure once more.

“It’s evident that Salah is being pushed into that offside position. “I’m sick,” one of them stated.

A second wrote, “Goalie will never ever ever save that in a million years, and Salah is already pushed offside by the Burnley player.” A whole f****** joke.”

“There is no way to rule that out!” F*** off. “Has nothing to do with it, and the defender is pushing him there,” a third added.

A fourth inquired, “Salah was pushed offside… “How come they didn’t show that on the VAR monitor?”

Diogo Jota scored from a tight angle in the 90th minute for Liverpool’s second goal on the third attempt.
