Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has explained why he was at Old Trafford on Christmas Day to watch his old club beat Aston Villa 3-2 in the Premier League.
Remember how Manchester United battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Aston Villa at Old Trafford?
Erik ten Hag’s team won thanks to a brace from Alejandro Garnacho and a goal from Rasmus Hojlund.
However, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the new minority owner, it was assumed that Van Persie’s presence suggested that he would soon succeed Ten Hag at Old Trafford.
However, according to the Mirror, the 40-year-old told MUTV that his trip to Old Trafford was pre-planned, refuting suggestions that he is due to take over from his compatriot.
“Obviously, it was a bit of a coincidence that I am here now with my wife and friends,” Van Persie told reporters.
“When I looked at the schedule, I thought, if I can pick that game, I’ll pick that game because of our shared memories against Villa.”
“It was one of the most memorable nights of my career as a Manchester United player.” Villa is having a good year, so it’ll be a fun game to watch.”
