Robin van Persie, a former Manchester United striker, has explained why he was at Old Trafford on Christmas Day to watch his old club beat Aston Villa 3-2 in the Premier League.
Remember when Manchester United overcame a 2-0 deficit to upset Aston Villa at Old Trafford?
Erik ten Hag’s team triumphed courtesy to Alejandro Garnacho’s brace and Rasmus Hojlund’s goal.
However, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the new minority owner, it was expected that Van Persie’s presence at Old Trafford meant that he would shortly follow Ten Hag.
According to the Mirror, the 40-year-old told MUTV that his journey to Old Trafford was pre-planned, denying reports that he is about to take over for his compatriot.
“Obviously, it was a bit of a coincidence that I am here right now with my wife and friends,” Van Persie said to reporters.
“When I looked at the schedule, I thought, if I can pick that game, I’ll pick that game because of our shared memories against Villa.”
“It was one of the most memorable nights of my career as a Manchester United player.” Villa is enjoying a strong year, so it should be an entertaining game to watch.”
