A disputed refereeing ruling during Everton’s match against Manchester City left Liverpool fans upset.
Manchester City is awarded a penalty against Everton by referee John Brooks.
When Nathan Aké’s shot in the Everton box was ruled to have been handled by Amadou Onana, Man City were awarded a penalty 64 minutes into the game. Despite the fact that Aké’s strong strike came from close range, giving Onana little time to shift his hands, referee John Brooks gave the penalty. This decision was not overturned by VAR because it was not deemed to be a clear and apparent error.
Julian lvarez converted the penalty, putting his team up 2-1. Bernardo Silva later scored another goal to give the visitors all three points.
Liverpool fans watching at home couldn’t help but think of a recent incident involving Arsenal captain Martin degaard, who was not penalized for what appeared to be a more premeditated handball at Anfield. Many supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with Premier League officials’ lack of consistency on social media.
“And just to rub salt into the wounds,” @TheKopWatch commented on X (previously Twitter). “Let’s play a game of ‘guess which of these was a penalty and which one wasn’t.'” PGMOL vs. LFC.”
“We’re fighting for the title against Man City, Arsenal and more importantly the PGMOL,” @LFCCarl_ said.
“Degaard plays basketball without a pen.” @wrighty1707 pointed out that “Onana gets it blasted at him from a yard, not making his body any bigger, and it’s a pen.”
“If that’s a penalty against Onana, how come Liverpool didn’t get a penalty against Arsenal for a similar situation off degaard’s arm?” @JC84_PT added, “Frustrating inconsistency.”
