Liverpool fans were irritated by a disputed refereeing ruling during Everton’s match against Manchester City.
Referee John Brooks awards Manchester City a penalty against Everton.
Man City were given a penalty 64 minutes into the game after Nathan Aké’s effort in the Everton box was ruled to have been touched by Amadou Onana. Despite the fact that Aké’s powerful blow came from close range, leaving Onana with little time to change his hands, referee John Brooks called a penalty. VAR did not overrule this decision since it was not assessed to be a clear and obvious error.
Julian Lvarez converted the penalty to give his team a 2-1 lead. Bernardo Silva scored again later in the game to give the visitors all three points.
Liverpool fans watching at home were reminded of a recent incident involving Arsenal captain Martin degaard, who was not penalized for what appeared to be a more intentional handball at Anfield. Many fans took to social media to express their displeasure with Premier League officials’ lack of consistency.
“And just to rub salt into the wounds,” @TheKopWatch said on X (formerly Twitter). “Let’s play a game of ‘guess which of these was a penalty and which one wasn’t.'” PGMOL versus LFC.”
“We’re fighting for the title against Man City, Arsenal and more importantly the PGMOL,” @LFCCarl_ stated on Twitter.
“Degaard plays basketball without a pen.” According to @wrighty1707, “Onana gets it blasted at him from a yard, not making his body any bigger, and it’s a pen.”
“If that’s a penalty against Onana, how come Liverpool didn’t get a penalty against Arsenal for a similar situation off degaard’s arm?” @JC84_PT also commented, “Frustrating inconsistency.”
