On Thursday, Cameroon coach Rigobert Song announced his roster for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations, which includes Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana but excludes Bayern Munich attacker Eric-Maxime Choupo-Moting.
Onana, 27, left Cameroon after a disagreement with Song during last year’s World Cup in Qatar, but returned after reconciling with the coach to help Cameroon qualify for the Cup of Nations finals, which begin on January 13 in the Ivory Coast.
Choupo-Moting, who debuted for Cameroon in the 2010 World Cup, paid the price for missing Cameroon’s previous three matches.
“Choupo-Moting is a fantastic player.” My team and I, on the other hand, want the continuity of recent times. He’s an important player, but we had to make a decision that was consistent with what we’ve been doing for a long time,” Song said during a news conference announcing his 27-man roster.
Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo, who had ankle surgery earlier this month, will be unavailable for Cameroon.
Song surprised everyone by selecting Wilfried Nathan Doualla, a 17-year-old Cameroonian league player who had never been called up before.
Vincent Aboubakar, the captain, will compete in his fifth Cup of Nations finals.
Cameroon’s first Group C match will be against Guinea on January 15, followed by matches against holders Senegal and Gambia.
