Top five games from the 2023 Major League Soccer campaign

Countless high-scoring games were played in both conferences during the regular season and in the playoffs during the 2023 Major League Soccer season.

It was difficult to pick only five games from the whole regular season that featured both spectacular comebacks and entertaining, high-scoring draws. Rivalry games carried some of the weight, while one of MLS’s newest teams made headlines with one of the season’s strangest games.

The top five games from the 2023 MLS season are shown below.

5. LA Galaxy 2-3 LAFC (April 16, 2023)

Carlos Vela

Carlos Vela and the Black and Gold defeated the Gs and former El Tri legend Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez on the road in enemy territory. Vela put LAFC up early on, but Tyler Boyd equalized just before halftime.

Vela scored his second goal with around 20 minutes remaining, and Ryan Hollingshead completed the scoring just a few minutes later. Marco Delgado grabbed one back in the waning stages of the Galaxy competition, but it was too late.

4. St Louis CITY 6-3 Austin FC (August 20, 2023)

St Louis completed the double over the Verde and Black, with braces from Nicholas Gioacchini and Samuel Adeniran propelling the club to victory.

St Louis led 4-1 with barely minutes remaining until four goals were scored in the closing eight minutes to give the hosts a 6-3 victory.

3. Atlanta United 3-3 New England Revolution (May 31, 2023)

Miguel Berry's lone goal in 2023 was a fantastic strike

The early-season match between Atlanta United and the New England Revolution was one of the most entertaining draws in MLS history.

2. Orlando City 4-3 Columbus Crew (September 16, 2023)

Orlando made an improbable comeback against the Crew

Julian Gressel, who has been linked with a move to Inter Miami to join Lionel Messi, opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Martin Ojeda equalized shortly after the second half began.

The Crew’s dynamic combo of Diego Rossi and Cucho Hernandez scored within 12 minutes of each other in the second half, and Wilfried Nancy’s side appeared to be done and dusted. However, Facundo Torres’ 73rd-minute goal gave the Lions a fighting chance.

Ramiro Enrique scored twice in the last minutes of the game, in the 86th and 97th minutes, to alter the course of the game and give Orlando all three points.

1. FC Cincinnati 2-3 Columbus Crew (December 2, 2023)

Cucho Hernandez

There was no way the last Hell is Real match in 2023 could be anything other than number one on the list.

With one foot in the MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield champions raced out to a dominating 2-0 lead in the first half. But what happened next was one of the most memorable events in MLS history.

With their backs to the wall, Nancy chose to bring on veteran attacker Christian Ramirez, who was instrumental in the Crew’s comeback, as his shot turned pass rebounded off FCC’s Alvas Powell into his own net to give Columbus a one-goal lead.

With around 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Rossi hit the back of the net to force extra time, where Ramirez would go on to score the game-winning goal in the 115th minute as the Crew went on to win the MLS Cup the following week over LAFC.
