Cristiano Ronaldo has replied to his omission from the list of the top ten players in 2023.
The IFFHS unveiled their Men’s World Best Player of 2023 earlier this week.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was crowned the best player of the year, knocking out Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
Rodri, a teammate of Haaland’s, finished fourth, ahead of Jude Bellingham and another City player, Kevin de Bruyne.
The top ten was completed by Harry Kane, Bernardo Silva, Vinicius Junior, and Lautaro Martinez.
After being rejected by IFFHS, Ronaldo was seen commenting on an Instagram post that displayed the list.
Under the post, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner added three laughing emojis and one eye-covering emoji.
Haaland is only the fifth player in IFFHS history to be awarded the best player.
“IFFHS was the first to create the Award of THE WORLD’S BEST PLAYER in 1988,” according to their official website. Before FIFA President Sepp Blatter asked IFFHS to cede this World Award to FIFA to become FIFA World Player of the Year, the three winners (1988 to 1990) were Marco Van Basten (1988 and 1989) and Lothar Matthaus (1990).
“Since 2020, the IFFHS has decided to award again IFFHS WORLD’S PLAYER OF THE YEAR and Robert Lewandowski was the winner of the Awards 2020 and 2021, Lionel Messi won in 2022.”
After suffering a foot injury, Norwegian superstar striker Haaland has missed City’s last several games.
When asked about Haaland’s fitness, City manager Pep Guardiola stated, “He’s still not with the team.” He feels better with his bone, but he hasn’t joined us for a single training session. Unfortunately, December is extremely crowded due to the large number of teams.
“January is extremely congested. Hopefully, he’ll be able to rejoin us in January.”
