Liverpool have joined Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain in the competition to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone next month, according to sources. Over the summer, Kone was thought to be a target for the Reds, but he stayed in Germany as Jurgen Klopp decided to go elsewhere.
Kone has continued to shine in the Bundesliga despite missing a substantial amount of the season due to injury and suspension. Liverpool have reignited their interest in the 22-year-old ahead of the January transfer window, according to Rudy Galetti, as a result of his strong midfield displays.
Despite signing Alexis MacAllister, Dominic Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch this summer, the Reds failed to sign a quality defensive midfielder. In recent weeks, Wataru Endo has been used as a holding player, but the position still has potential for improvement, with a move for Kone providing the best option.
However, Liverpool will not be the only team interested in signing Kone next month, with PSG keeping an eye on his development as well. According to the report, he is one of several names being considered in the French city as Luis Enrique looks to bolster his midfield ranks in the winter transfer window.
Liverpool are rumored to be interested in signing Manu Kone in January.
Spurs are also said to be interested in Kone, with Ange Postecoglou searching for reinforcements to bolster his injury-plagued squad. The north Londoners are currently suffering with a large number of injuries and might benefit from some more bodies in the second part of the season.
It will be intriguing to see if Liverpool or any other team can persuade Monchengladbach to sell Kone when the bidding opens next month. He is still under contract with his current employers until the summer of 2026, meaning that a significant sum of money will be required to retain his services.
PSG and Tottenham are rumored to be interested in Kone as well.
Kone has already stated his love for Liverpool, with his former coach Reda Bekhti revealing earlier this year that he once wore a Reds jersey during a tryout. “It would be especially satisfying for Manu,” Bekhti, a former Paris FC academy trainer, said. Because Liverpool is his favorite team, I recall him wearing a Liverpool jersey during his trial at Paris FC.
“Liverpool would be a great next step for him and a great career move.” He would have the opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League while playing for one of England’s most popular clubs. He could only advance and demonstrate his talent in such an environment.
