Nottingham Forest won their first game against Manchester United since 1994 thanks to Morgan Gibbs-White, as Erik ten Hag’s side closed a turbulent year with a whimper.
The Red Devils had won the previous 11 encounters between the teams in all competitions, but new manager Nuno Espirito Santo would celebrate a spectacular second triumph in five days.
After Marcus Rashford had capitalized on a poor Matt Turner pass to cancel out Nicolas Dominguez’s goal, Gibbs-White’s late strike from the edge of the box sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory.
This was United’s 14th defeat in all competitions this season, and it was a dismal end to the year for a team that was a pale copy of the one that came from behind to beat Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Rasmus Hojlund was out due to illness, and Ten Hag’s team underperformed at the City Ground, where a dull first half gave way to an exciting second half.
Rodriguez put Forest ahead in the 64th minute, only for Turner to see a bad ball cut out as Rashford rifled in a 78th-minute equalizer.
But four minutes later, the goalie helped make amends by stopping Christian Eriksen before the hosts surged up the field and Gibbs-White hammered the hosts back ahead.
Turner held tight in stoppage time to secure Forest’s first home victory over United since 1992.
Sir Dave Brailsford, INEOS’s director of sport, joined Sir Alex Ferguson on the Trent’s banks, where Kobbie Mainoo headed away an early Dominguez effort.
Chris Wood, buoyed by his hat-trick against Newcastle on Boxing Day, drove wide before United survived an 11th-minute scare.
Former Manchester United player Anthony Elanga drove a cross into the box on the left, and Raphael Varane’s clumsy attempt to clear it took it over the helpless Andre Onana and across the face of goal.
The Forest fans sang “you’re not famous anymore” as their team maintained their lead, thanks in part to United’s poor decision making and passing.
Ten Hag’s men were packed out in attacking areas, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka saw a shot blocked shortly after Ryan Yates scooped over at the other end.
A lackluster first half continued until the break, when Scott McTominay came on to replace Mainoo.
Ten Hag also substituted Antony in the 54th minute, prompting Forest cries of “what a waste of money” as Amad Diallo made his first United debut in two years.
A minute later, United almost took the lead through the unusual source of Diogo Dalot. The full-back’s first-time long-range effort was deflected off the right post.
But, in reality, Forest had come out of halftime with greater bite, and the City Ground was shaking in the 64th minute.
Elanga fed right-back Gonzalo Montiel, who followed an expert touch with a clever cutback for compatriot Dominguez to stroke into the bottom corner.
It was a fantastic strike that elicited cries of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” directed at Ten Hag.
As United sought a leveller that Turner was relieved not to give them, Alejandro Garnacho blasted an acrobatic effort into the ground and onto the roof of the net.
The miskick by the Forest goalie sailed high in the air but returned back to him. His blushes, however, would not be spared for long.
Turner’s sloppy pass out from the back was intercepted by Garnacho, who squared for Rashford to equalize in the 78th minute.
Forest fans erupted after the goalkeeper’s latest gaffe, and there were murmurs when he touched the ball again.
Turner’s blushes were saved when he stopped Eriksen, causing a Forest break. Gibbs-White curled beyond Onana into the bottom corner after Elanga squared for him.
The stadium exploded again as Turner expertly tipped over a deflected Fernandes effort midway through 10 minutes of stoppage time.
Amad was also refused before the final whistle, which sent the players to the ground.
