Dean Saunders of talkSPORT couldn’t believe it when he learned that Manchester United are supposedly interested in Timo Werner.
The Premier League giants have struggled in attack this season, scoring only 22 goals in 20 Premier League games, and the January transfer window could help them turn things around.
Werner has been linked with a January move to Manchester United.
The Athletic says that, with the market officially open, United has approached RB Leipzig about the potential cost of acquiring Werner.
Despite winning the Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup during his two seasons with Chelsea, the German had modest success in front of goal, scoring just ten goals in 56 games.
Werner has scored 18 goals in 54 appearances since returning to Leipzig, with only two coming this season in eight games.
When Breakfast host Jeff Stelling told Saunders about Werner’s links to United, it’s safe to assume he was less than thrilled.
“Manchester United? That’s on par with Sir Dave Brailsford, a cycling expert, getting in and making decisions. That’s a wind-up, I mean, it’s just one after the other. “Will they sign Timo Werner?”
“Well, he had a habit of missing chances, didn’t he?” Saunders said. He got one at Chelsea every time, which is not ideal for a striker, but he did.
“His movement is excellent and quick, but he has a habit of missing every time he gets close to the goal.” What do you expect from him? If you sign a winger-turned-striker, often known as a forward, you’re looking for goals and assists.
“If you’re not doing that, work your tail off, stay with the team, and do something else for us.” He doesn’t make or score many points, and you’re going to have to give him a fortune.”
When he heard the connections, Saunders was taken aback.
Werner struggled in front of goal for much of his time at Chelsea.
United are presently seventh in the Premier League after a 2-1 loss against Nottingham Forest, their ninth league defeat of the season.
Erik ten Hag’s side is now out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup, leaving the FA Cup as their only remaining chance to win silverware.
Previous January signings have not gone well for them, with Odion Ighalo and Wout Weghorst failing to impress.

United fans have also been cautioned that the January transfer window may be quiet for them.
