Since his contentious hiring in October, Rooney has only managed two victories. Birmingham began the Championship in sixth place; now, he is down to 20th.

American billionaire Tom Wagner’s company acquired the team last summer, and with it, popular coach John Eustace, who had led the team to promotion after 15 months in charge, was fired.

The team released a statement saying, “Birmingham City has today parted company with manager Wayne Rooney and first-team coach Carl Robinson.” “Despite their greatest efforts, the outcomes have fallen short of the initial, clearly stated goals. Consequently, the board believes that the football team would benefit from a change in management.

On Monday, Birmingham lost 3-0 at Leeds, and fans demanded that Rooney, the former England and Manchester United striker, be fired.

In his comments, Rooney said, “I understand they haven’t performed to the level I wanted them to. Football is a results business.” “Yet, time is the most valuable resource a manager needs, and I don’t think 13 weeks was enough to oversee the necessary changes.”

It “will take me some time to get over this setback,” but in the end, 38-year-old Rooney said, he will “prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager.”

After spending a complete season as manager of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, he had joined Birmingham in early October. Rooney managed a lower division Derby team in the past.

Birmingham’s only significant trophy win in its 148-year history came from winning the English League Cup the year it made its Premier League debut.
