The player and his team denied that Greenwood had abused them in the 50th minute with a profanity in English, according to the post-match report written by referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez.

Coach Jose Bordalas of Getafe remarked, “He doesn’t speak Spanish very well; he told me he was saying something else.”

“He was frustrated because the referee was not calling any fouls on him, but he never offended anyone.”

Greenwood is currently on loan from Manchester United to play for Getafe after prosecutors ended a criminal investigation into an alleged attempted rape.

When Juanmi Latasa was sent off for a second yellow card just before halftime, Greenwood’s dismissal put the home team ahead by a man down for ten minutes.

Damian Suarez, a defender for Getafe, was also dismissed for abusing the assistant referee just after the right-back was replaced in the 70th minute.

Rayo ended an eight-match losing streak with a goal from Sergio Camello in stoppage time in the first half and shortly after the break.

Real Sociedad survived a late 1-1 home draw against Alaves despite goalkeeper Alex Remiro receiving a red card in the first half.

Six minutes into stoppage time, Martin Zubimendi scored from inside the box to give Sociedad a point.

Alaves, who also lost 1-0 at home to leaders Real Madrid in the previous round due to stoppage time while playing with an extra man, now have a 25-match winless record on the road.

Giuliano Simeone, an Alaves forward and the son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone, made his debut in the 70th minute after suffering a broken leg during a preseason friendly.

“It’s bittersweet,” Simeone remarked.

“I’m happy to be playing again, but it’s a shame that we let the win escape by conceding that goal in the end.”

At home, Valencia defeated Villarreal 3-1 thanks to two penalties that Pepelu converted.
