According to sources, RB Leipzig are willing to allow Manchester United target Timo Werner depart on loan this month but want assurances over his game time.
The forward might help United’s struggling offensive options.
The Germany international has emerged as a surprising target for the Red Devils, who are aiming to improve their attacking options after a goal drought in the first half of the season.
Only two sides in the Premier League this season have scored fewer goals than Erik ten Hag’s misfiring side: Sheffield United (20th) and Burnley (19th).
Summing up the marquee signing Rasmus Hojlund has only scored once in the league, and Anthony Martial, Antony Martial, and Marcus Rashford have all struggled in front of goal.
United are thought to have a four-man shortlist of possible striker possibilities, with their ambitions hampered by the fact that they can only afford a loan or a low-cost transfer.
Despite signing a contract extension, Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller remains a goal; teammate Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is still a possibility; while Stuttgart wonder Serhou Guirassy has a highly appealing release clause.
Despite only returning to Leipzig 18 months ago for a cost in the region of £25 million, Werner is the fourth name on United’s list.
Werner has only made two Bundesliga starts this season.
Prior to that, the 27-year-old had a miserable stint at Chelsea, scoring only 10 goals in 56 Premier League games, and has failed to resurrect his career in Germany.
Werner has only scored twice in the Bundesliga this season and has frequently been benched in favor of Lois Openda and Youssuf Poulsen.
As a result, the Mirror reports that Leipzig are willing to loan him out this month, but only if the interested club can guarantee he will start on a regular basis.
Leipzig believe Werner, who has only made two Bundesliga appearances this season owing to a slew of injury issues, needs consistent game time to regain his form ahead of next summer’s Euros in Germany.
It remains to be seen whether United can make such a guarantee, despite the fact that the club already has a plethora of attacking resources, even if many of them are currently suffering for form and confidence in front of goal.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, is desperate for more firepower and is unlikely to find a player with a stronger pedigree than Werner available on loan.
After leaving Chelsea, the Germany international netted nine times in 27 Bundesliga appearances last season, after being the leading scorer in the country with 28 goals in 34 appearances the previous season.
