RB Leipzig are willing to let Manchester United target Timo Werner leave on loan this month, according to sources, but they want assurances over his game time.
The forward might assist United’s faltering offense.
The Germany international has emerged as an unexpected target for the Red Devils, who are looking to bolster their attacking options following a goal drought in the first half of the season.
Only two Premier League teams have scored fewer goals this season than Erik ten Hag’s misfiring side: Sheffield United (20th) and Burnley (19th).
Rasmus Hojlund has only scored once in the league, and Anthony Martial, Antony Martial, and Marcus Rashford have all struggled in front of goal.
United are reported to have a four-man striker shortlist, with their goals limited by the reality that they can only afford a loan or a low-cost move.
Despite signing a contract extension, Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich remains a target; colleague Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is still a possibility; and Stuttgart wonder Serhou Guirassy has an extremely tempting release clause.
Werner is the fourth name on United’s list despite only returning to Leipzig 18 months ago for a fee in the region of £25 million.
Werner has made only two Bundesliga appearances this season.
Prior to that, the 27-year-old struggled at Chelsea, netting only 10 goals in 56 Premier League appearances, and has yet to reignite his career in Germany.
Werner has only scored twice this season in the Bundesliga and has been frequently benched in favor of Lois Openda and Youssuf Poulsen.
As a result, according to the Mirror, Leipzig are willing to loan him away this month if the interested club can guarantee he will start on a regular basis.
Leipzig think Werner, who has only appeared in two Bundesliga games this season due to a litany of physical concerns, needs consistent game time to rediscover his fitness ahead of the Euros in Germany next year.
It remains to be seen whether United can offer such a guarantee, despite the fact that the club already has an abundance of attacking resources, many of which are currently struggling for form and confidence in front of goal.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, is anxious for more firepower and is unlikely to find a loan player with a higher pedigree than Werner.
After departing Chelsea, the Germany international scored nine goals in 27 Bundesliga matches last season, after leading the country in scoring the previous season with 28 goals in 34 outings.
