Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro of Manchester United have resumed full training ahead of their FA Cup third round match against Wigan Athletic.
Throughout the season, the two have struggled with fitness.
Last season, the South American combination were two of United’s most significant players as Erik ten Hag’s team finished third and won the Carabao Cup.
Their seasons have been cut short by injuries, with Martinez sidelined for the last three months.
Last season, he suffered a season-ending foot injury in April after breaking his metatarsal in a Europa League match against Sevilla.
He returned to the squad for pre-season after undergoing surgery, but worsened the condition again in September, necessitating a second procedure.
In total, the Argentina international has started just six games this season, with Hag forced to identify eleven different center-half combinations this season due to a slew of injuries in his backline.
Martinez, who has been out since November, returned to full training this week with Casemiro. The Brazil international suffered an injury during United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford, casting doubt on his future at the club.
Last week, Ten Hag told reporters that Martinez and Casemiro will most likely return this month. Due to the short mid-season break, United only plays two games in January.
United play Wigan in the third round next Monday before visiting Tottenham in the Premier League on January 14th.
Ten Hag has also been missing Harry Maguire and Mason Mount, with Tyrell Malacia still set to play this season despite suffering a knee injury at the end of the 2022-23 season.
The trio is also set to return this month.
‘We expect several players returning in mid-January,’ Ten Hag said at a news conference last week. Casemiro, Mason [Mount], [Lisandro] Martinez, and Tyrell Malacia.
‘Of course, we expect Harry Maguire. Many players are expected to return in January.’
