David Seaman, an Arsenal veteran, has stated that he is ‘worried’ by some of the things he has witnessed from Andre Onana following the Manchester United star’s up-and-down season.
Onana took over as Manchester United’s No. 1 goalkeeper after joining from Serie A club Inter Milan in a £47.2 million move last summer.
The 27-year-old United goalkeeper was instrumental in Inter’s march to the Champions League final last season, which ended in a 1-0 loss to Manchester City.
After replacing De Gea in goal, Onana was reunited with ex-Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at United, and huge expectations were placed on his shoulders.
The Manchester United player has received harsh criticism for his Champions League outings, with Onana making costly errors against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.
Despite his errors in Europe’s top-tier club competition, Ten Hag has stuck with Onana rather than Tom Heaton or summer signing Altay Bayindir.
Prior to the Champions League, Onana has had a better run of play in the Premier League, keeping six clean sheets in 20 outings.
The former Ajax player is presently deadlocked for the Premier League Golden Glove trophy with Newcastle’s Nick Pope, Liverpool’s Alisson, and Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
On his Seaman Says podcast, Seaman expressed his dissatisfaction with Onana’s performance thus far, calling him a “real mixed bag.”
“Onana is a real mixed bag.” He’s made some terrific saves, but he’s also made some easy saves while attempting to make them look good,” he explained.
“He’s also had some real stinkers.” There’s just too much else there that scares me.”
“He makes saves look good, his style is totally different, the way he makes saves is strange,” Seaman remarked. It’s almost as if he hasn’t had much instruction from a young age since he produces strange saves.”
Onana will miss time with United after reversing his international retirement and being named to Cameroon’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Cameroon international is likely to be eligible for United’s FA Cup third-round match against Wigan on Monday and Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday.
United and Cameroon negotiated a deal for Onana to represent the Red Devils until mid-January before departing for AFCON duty.
Onana could wind up playing two matches in two days, with United meeting Spurs on January 14th and Cameroon facing Guinea in their AFCON opening on January 15th.
The time away from Old Trafford might be a breath of fresh air for the former Inter star, allowing Onana to concentrate on Cameroon’s international achievements.
