Following Manchester United’s up-and-down season, David Seaman, an Arsenal veteran, has claimed that he is ‘worried’ by some of the things he has witnessed from Andre Onana.
Onana took over as Manchester United’s No. 1 goalkeeper after joining for £47.2 million from Serie A club Inter Milan last summer.
Last season, the 27-year-old United goalkeeper played a key role in Inter’s run to the Champions League final, which ended in a 1-0 loss to Manchester City.
Onana was reunited with ex-Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at United after replacing De Gea in goal, and tremendous expectations were placed on his shoulders.
The Manchester United player has come under fire for his performances in the Champions League, with Onana making costly mistakes against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.
Despite his mistakes in Europe’s best club league, Ten Hag has chosen Onana above Tom Heaton or summer signing Altay Bayindir.
Prior to the Champions League, Onana had a better Premier League record, keeping six clean sheets in 20 appearances.
The former Ajax player is now tied for the Premier League Golden Glove award with Nick Pope of Newcastle, Alisson of Liverpool, and Jordan Pickford of Everton.
Seaman highlighted his displeasure with Onana’s performance thus far on his Seaman Says podcast, calling him a “real mixed bag.”
“Onana is a real mixed bag.” “He’s made some fantastic saves, but he’s also made some easy saves while trying to make them look good,” he said.
“He’s also had some real stinkers.” There’s just too much else there to be afraid of.”
“He makes saves look good, his style is totally different, the way he makes saves is strange,” Seaman said. It’s almost as if he hasn’t had much teaching since he was a child, because he makes weird saves.”
After reversing his international retirement and being nominated to Cameroon’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, Onana will miss time with United.
The Cameroon international is expected to be available for United’s FA Cup third-round meeting against Wigan on Monday, as well as their Premier League fixture against Tottenham on Sunday.
Onana agreed to represent the Red Devils until mid-January before going for AFCON duties with United and Cameroon.
Onana could end up playing two games in two days, with United taking on Spurs on January 14th and Cameroon taking on Guinea in their AFCON opener on January 15th.
The time away from Manchester United might be a breath of fresh air for the former Inter star, allowing Onana to focus on Cameroon’s international exploits.
