Because to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023, Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat will miss a few Manchester United games. Manchester United will be looking for back-to-back victories at this critical juncture in their 2023-24 season in order to turn things around and get back on track.
However, because the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 begins in Ivory Coast in January, head coach Erik ten Hag will be forced to deal with absentees.
Ten Hag will be without goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat since they are representing their respective national teams, Cameroon and Morocco. Depending on how their teams perform in the Ivory Coast competition, they could miss many games.
The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to begin on January 13 in Ivory Coast. Cameroon will face Guinea in the first group round encounter on Monday, January 15. Morocco’s first game will be against Tanzania two days later.
Rumor has it that Manchester United and Cameroon have reached an agreement on Onana’s delayed release.
Following United’s match against Tottenham on January 14, the goalie will travel to Ivory Coast to join his international teammates, just in time for the national team’s debut the following day. This has been agreed upon by both the national team and the club.
With this mechanism in place, Onana should only be out of the FA Cup in the fourth round if Manchester United advances past the third round and Cameroon is eliminated in the preliminary round.
Onana will play for the Premier League team even if the club and national team are eliminated in the third round of the FA Cup and the group stage of the AFCON, respectively.
If Cameroon progresses to the AFCON 2023 final on February 11, Onana could be forced to miss up to four club games, including a likely FA Cup fourth-round encounter.
Onana is likely to play for United in the FA Cup on Monday, but it is unclear whether he would then play for his club or his country.
