Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe’s historic duel in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, in which Messi scored two goals and Mbappe scored a hat-trick, will live on in infamy.
Argentina’s Messi defeated France’s Mbappe in a penalty shootout, but the two are far from competitors. In fact, Mbappe defended Messi in an interview with Amazon Prime Sport, claiming that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was not treated fairly during their time together at Paris Saint-Germain.
“You always miss playing with Leo Messi,” Mbappé said when questioned about his time with Messi on Amazon Prime Sport (h/t ESPN). “As a forward, you love running into space; with him [on your team], you know you’ll get the ball.” It’s a perk that only he can provide. Overall, it’s been a pleasure to work with him. Messi is deserving of every respect, yet in France, he was not given the respect he needed.”
Messi’s time in France did not begin badly, but by the time he decided not to return to the French club for a third season, he was being booed at home matches due to his failure to lead the club to the elusive UEFA Champions League title and his decision not to return to PSG for a third season.
But Messi’s time at PSG was not without success. Messi won the Ligue 1 title twice and the Trophée des Champions once during his two seasons at PSG. In 75 games for the club, he also has 32 goals and 35 assists.
Messi is presently a member of the MLS club Inter Miami CF. Mbappe has a contract with PSG until 2024.
